Generation Independence
(Portsmouth University)
Generation Independence is a series of short documentaries about Algerian university students and graduates in the 1960s and 1970s. In a context of revolutionary enthusiasm, mass illiteracy and material shortages, these women and men got factories and transport up-and-running, designed university programmes, developed the national press and provided healthcare to isolated rural communities.
This project is designed and coordinated by Natalya Vince, Reader in North African and French Area Studies at the University of Portsmouth in the UK and Walid Benkhaled, documentary filmmaker, production manager and lecturer in film at the University of Portsmouth.

Toufik was commissioned to curate the artistic response to the generation Independence research, working with three contemporary Algerian artists: Louise Dib, Hichem Gaoua and Amine Dahmane. A first presentation of the project was held at Maison française d’Oxford in March 2020, before the Covid outbreak.
